I've been excited about this one for a long time and if you love house music, you should be too. When it comes to electronic music, I'm a sucker for French house, so when a legendary producer and DJ from that genre comes to town, I definitely take notice. The Summit Music hall will be hosting exactly that this weekend on Saturday, September 8th with a special live set from Fred Falke.


French producer Fred Falke got his start in the music realm as a funk bass player in the mid 1990s. He turned to electronic production towards the end of the decade, the same time now prolific and influential French house artists like Daft Punk and Cassius were churning out next level fuel for the dance floor. He began collaborating with Alan Braxe - the same producer that collaborated with Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter to create the now classic "Music Sounds Better With You" under the name Stardust - and the pair went on to create a slew of quality releases throughout most of the 2000s. Fred Falke has also put out a steady stream of solo work and in-demand remixes, along with other notable collaborations with Kris Menace.



Fred Falke's latest solo work is Part IV, a full length album of productions that embraces the millennial French house sound wrapped around the signature touch Fred Falke has maintained over the years and is sought after for - it may be his first solo LP, but by no means is it his first rodeo. What makes Fred Falke's show this weekend special, aside from his pedigree as an accomplished producer, is he will be performing a rare live set that will show off his capability as a bass player as he simultaneously DJs - definitely a sight to see considering the way Fred Falke craftily drives his productions with infectious bass lines.


Before the main event, a stable of local Denver DJs will warm up the dance floor: option4, Jinro, Collin McKenna, Matt Ferry and Vanish. Currently a hot name in the local DJ scene for what he does for house music both behind the decks and off them, DJ/producer option4 (TheHundred, Lipgloss, Discotheque Collective) will lay down a house music set hot on the heels of his EP release To The Night. I have a hard time writing about myself in third person - so I'll just say Jinro will be there. Collin McKenna, a DJ who has been flexing his taste-making muscles on Star Stuff Scallywags will also be gracing the decks. Matt Ferry will be bringing the latest heat, thanks to his ties to Beatport. Vanish, option4's label mate on Velcro City Records, rounds out the opening lineup.

Glowing House, is about to set off on their 'Middle America' tour with Chicago's Exit Ghost, kicking everything off with a show tonight in Denver at Unit E before wrapping up in Chicago on September 9th. Denver's indie-folk darlings Glowing House just released their sophomore album Days Run Out this summer, and now they are set to hit the road to share their music. We're sharing a song you may not have heard if you haven't caught Glowing House live yet - a song that debuted about the same time as their new album but hasn't yet been released. This video was recorded at the first live performance of this song at Mile High Spirits in June.


"When The World Stands You Up" is a short and sweet piece that is loaded with Glowing House's characteristic lyrical attention to detail. The song is built around the idea of an elder passing on advice, with the poignant chorus, "Never write in stone, you'll leave nowhere to go. You'll find what you're made of when the world stands you up."

Murder By Death are coming through Denver for a two-night stint at the Bluebird Theater.  The Bloomington, IN group were here last year when they played a sold-out show at the Bluebird, hence the extra night this go-round, and were Main Stage guests during the 2011 Westword Music Showcase; it may be safe to say they have a dedicated following here in Denver.  The band's new record label as of this past June, Bloodshot Records, announced that their sixth full-length album, Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon, would be available September 25.  To help fund their vinyl release of the newest album, the band took to Kickstarter and just yesterday were named the site's third highest-funded music project ever.  Very exciting news for this band, and exciting news in general for all of the artists out there who are looking for ways to more directly connect their work with their fans.  Denver hip hop artist Sole told Concerted Effort about his Kickstarter plans a few months back and it looks like he also successfully raised enough money to release his next album on his own.

It will be great to see some new music from this seasoned group, and I'm also looking forward to their addition of Scott Brackett, formerly of Okkervil River, whom has been performing with the band for a while now but I just haven't been able to witness it first hand.



Also playing tonight will be label-mates Ha Ha Tonka, who bring an alt-country sound to the stage befitting the headliners.  I saw them play at the Hi-Dive last year and it was a great performance; perhaps with a bigger venue, we will get to see a few new tricks from these Missouri boys.

It's been a long time coming, but the wait is over: To The Night, the debut official release from Denver DJ and producer option4 is available starting today. About three years ago, option4 was slated to release an album, but an unfortunate incident robbed him of all his hard work. Understandably devastated, option4 had to start the process all over again, but that didn't come until he found new inspiration in the city he currently calls home.


After some time as a resident DJ at Lipgloss and founding a house music movement of his own called TheHundred, the moment seemed right to hit the production studio again to create a collection of songs that reflected his emotions and experiences influenced by the places he's seen and the relationships that he has built. Seeking to combine an appreciation of techno, and funky soul with house music, the four tracks on To The Night represent his interpretation.


The EP opens with the bass-laden "Sunny Side" that juxtaposes a dark tech-house feel with a hint of acid house layered under airy vocals from Aubree. "Darkworld" envelops the listener like a thick, hypnotic fog; sobering yet infectious. "Mile High Bounce" was made with Denver in mind, a tribute to the vibrant late-night/early-morning dance music scene that thrives week after week. The whole album is rooted around the fiery single "Ride On", a tech-house western inspired by a gloomy drive on the west coast that mixes acoustic guitar with thumping bass and delivers an incredible hook.


The album will be available exclusively on beatport.com for one month before hitting other outlets like iTunes, so head on over there to grab a fresh copy for yourself. Into its ninth month and showing no signs of slowing down, TheHundred is back again this weekend with another sure-to-be sweltering dance party, this time right at midsummer. They key to TheHundred's success thus far has been providing hot up-and-coming acts with local talent to create an atmosphere filled with good vibes for large, dance hungry, house music loving crowds. This weekend's lineup is no exception and should prove to be another night to remember.

The headliner is Moon Boots, a representative of the excellent French Express record label. Moon Boots' repertoire consists of nu-disco originals and remixes that are tailor made for hot summer nights. True to his name, Moon Boots creates dance music that pairs a futuristic spaced out feel with weightless ease - veritable rocket fuel for the dance floor. Check out "Got Somebody".


Also joining the lineup is Chicago based via New York DJ Lani Love. Also a fashion blogger, Lani Love incorporates her eye for style and eclecticism in her music selection, bringing that same dose of personality into her sets. The local support for this hot night of dancing starts with TheHundred founder option4, who will get the night started with a mood setting deep house set before getting the sweat flowing later in the night with some summertime house music. I may have just gotten back from the amazing marathon music weekend known as the Underground Music Showcase, but I'm ready to keep it going with another show at the Larimer Lounge tonight, especially with the lineup they have in store. Two innovative east coast imports share the headline, with a hot new local act getting the night of music started.

Young Magic is trio composed of world travels, two from Australia and one from Indonesia, that came together and formed their band in New York. Their collaboration meant melding together influences culled from the globe and from across time, creating a sound with an electronic hip-hop/bass footprint that mixes in tribal rhythms and '60s psychedelia. Quilt is a band from Boston that can instantly transport listeners back in time about a half century with their sunshine-pop drenched indie rock sound. Ethereal vocal harmonies intertwine with bright guitars and deliberate beats to create something soothingly energetic. Check out "Rabid Love".



Cerulean opens the night as local support, but the duo and their innovative electronic dream-pop sound should definitely not be missed. The brother-sister duo took the internet by storm with the couple tracks they have released so far, and tonight is a rare opportunity to see them both live, as while brother Elliot Baker lives in Colorado, his sister Marilyn resides across the pond in London. Tristen is a singer-songwriter, with a debut album under her belt and a song to share more than a year after its release. She calls Nashville home, and shares a record label (American Myth Recordings) with another buzzing songstress, Lissy Trullie.  Tristen is a fresh voice; it's something I noticed right away when I recently listened to Charlatans at the Garden Gate.  Her songs are adorned in catchy, pop melodies, but sounds strong and like a folk song without "the extra fat."  Maybe you're like me, and you openly admit to being absorbed by the shininess of pop music but hate the aftertaste, and you love the heartiness of lyrically-substantial folk songs but freely admit that it's not as appealing.  And Tristen seems to bring both together, like a well-balanced meal that tastes too good to be true.  Even so, Tristen sprinkles a country twang on top and it sounds so good.



The Changing Colors are a folk pair that really hone in on the hearty lyrics and well-crafted guitar hooks that are equal parts comforting and catchy.  Not like pop music catchy, but there is definitely something about the simplicity of the lyrics that makes me want to sing along or hum along if I'm feeling shy.  The band calls Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs home, and their last release was an album called Ghost of Red Mountain; an eerie coincedence that conjures up images of the recent fires, though the album predates the tragedy by almost two years. Given the new perspective of current events, maybe these songs will be even more poignant performed live than they already were.

Holophrase, a local Denver rock band with a myriad of influences and an eclectic sound that leans towards experimental and progressive rock is releasing their new EP, Horizons of Expectation, tonight at the Hi-Dive. Although guitarists Luis Etscheid, Jared Henning, and drummer Caleb Henning played music together since they were in high school, the band didn't coalesce until two years ago when they met singer and violinist Malgosia Stacha. Now they are releasing their first EP, with a live show that promises the fusion of both their auditory and visual art. Bad Weather California, Jason Anderson, and Wire Faces also join the night's bill. Check out this video to learn more about the Holophrase story.

On Friday, July 6, ManCub will be rocking the Larimer Lounge once more, this time with Drop The Lime and Cassian on the bill. The live ManCub experience is one that is constantly changing. Alex Anderson strives to stay innovative and deliver something new and better every time he takes the stage as ManCub. This Friday will be no exception. ManCub will perform as a duo, but instead of another person on effects pedals and backing vocals, Alex Anderson will be joined by DJ Babyshoe. Together the pair will play a set where they will perform a DJ set with music live remixed and manipulated both through the DJ decks and ManCub's array of effects pedals to deliver a unique live experience.

Cassian:
The electro, nu-disco producer known for his club-ready, Euro-infused beats just released The Love Cuts EP  a few weeks ago. The Sydney native has been touring the festival circuit, including SnowBall Music Festival a few months ago. Signed to Windish Agency, alongside A-Trak, Washed Out, Chromeo and M83. In 2011 Cassian completed a slew of well received remixes for artists such as PNAU, The Rapture, Bag Raiders, Gigamesh, Citizens! and Miami Horror (who he collaborated with for a joint remix). Denver is his last stop on his US Tour before playing three dates in California before heading to the Dominican Republic.

Drop The Lime:
NYC native Luca Venezia aka Drop the Lime is an electronic producer and DJ and founder of dance label Trouble & Bass. He is best known for his distinct twist on the Trouble & Bass sound, combining his love of Rockabilly with his own take on bass-driven music. Vivian Host describes Venezia's sound as comprising "chopped-up breaks making hairpin turns, breakdowns coming out of nowhere, a foundation of wobbling goblin bass often cut in with tropical, clacking snares", with "enigmatic lyrics in his singularly scratchy, bluesy notes." In other words, Drop the Lime takes the rowdiest parts of electronic, rock and bass music to create an unforgettable dance experience.

Instant Empire is one of Denver’s best kept secrets. Fresh off the release of their sophomore effort, Heavy Hollow,  the six-piece has been heralded by local press as the next up-and-coming band to watch.

Denver’s Westword likens Instant Empire to The Hold Steady and The Mountain Goats, calling Heavy Hollow a project “dripping with ambition” that is a ”blunt-force drama…dotted by nuanced rhythm and expertly paced melody.” Likewise, Reverb says “together, the outfit cranks out anthemic tracks that ring with honesty and sincerity.”

The indie rock band solidified its lineup just last year, placing Matt Grizzell on drums, Aaron Stone on bass, Doug Chase on keyboards and Sean Connaughty and Lou Kucera on guitar. Scotty Saunders leads the band’s dynamic sound as lead vocalist.

Together, the band produces sweeping, anthem-esque stories of love, youth, recklessness, freedom and uncertainty that are sure to pique the interest of even the staunchest music critic. Check out their video for "Cadillac Road (live)".

David Dondero is a true American troubadour if ever such a thing could be such a thing.  He has been performing for a long time, but as as a solo artist he really came into his own when he signed onto Conor Oberst's record label, Team Love, and released South of the South in 2005.  His songs about traveling across the country are honest and heartfelt; don't confuse heartfelt with sensitive, because Dondero has tough skin and typically isn't afraid to tell it to you straight in his lyrics.

Dondero is a welcome face at the Hi-Dive, having performed there atleast once every year that I've lived in Denver.  His last release was 2011's A Pre-existing Condition on Ghostmeat Records, which includes some nice covers from blues and country artists like Lowell George and Charley Pride.  Like any true songwriter worth his salt, I'm sure Dondero will surprise us with some new tracks he has been working on (he had a new song to share back in February in Brooklyn, a show where the picture below was taken).  If you are new to the music of David Dondero, I included one of my favorite songs here for you to check out.





Elliot Moonshine & the Ghost and The Maykit will both be opening for David Dondero tonight.  Both bands are based in Denver, so it will be interesting to see how the local talent shapes up to Mr. Dondero.  Here are a couple of tracks from those two groups - check it out:

Folk music lovers of Denver that are familiar with Glowing House should know that this husband-and-wife duo are releasing a new album.  And this new album is being celebrated officially at the Hi-Dive this Saturday.  For anyone new to Glowing House, their CD release show is going to be a folk treat with local artists Poet's Row and You Me and Apollo playing alongside the folk couple, and who will also be inviting their friends and collaborators to the stage to properly introduce their new album Days Run Out.

The core members of Glowing House are Steve Varney and Jess Parsons, and both of them were performing music separately before joining forces as bandmates and as a married couple.  Former drummer Patrick Kline was one of the staples of the group's fluid lineup, but as folk music goes you can expect that the community is naturally drawn to collaboration. In recording the new album, Varney and Parsons brought in the talents of cellist Phil Parker and local Denver musicians Jeanie Schroder (DeVotchKa) as well as Wes Watkins (Petals of Spain/Air Dubai) to add to the musical accompaniment.  The new album was recorded in the Morrison Community Church where Varney's father is a pastor.

Days Run Out is the sophomore release by Parsons and Varney and was produced by Jamie Mefford.  Since their first album was handled by the band from start to finish, they were effusive in their praise for Mefford's finishing touch on the album.  "World class microphones plus a guy like him . . . it was interesting how laid back not only he is, but also just the way he records." said Varney.  When asked about the differences between the recording process when you are working with a producer like Mefford, Parsons responded, "Jamie knows how to make a record, and we know how to write songs and perform.  The first album is very much what we did live, that's how I thought of it; it's what I sing and what I play live.  And it's amazing to have someone with an ear for when we put this all together how is it going to sound." Mefford worked has worked with the likes of Gregory Alan Isakov, Carbon Choir, Dan Craig, Jeromy Dion.

How do musicians initiate the collaboration process? I don't know if it's always this easy, but sometimes you just go up to someone and ask, like how Glowing House approached Jeanie Schroder. "We just happened to meet her one night.  It was just a moment like 'Oh, you're here and we're here and we're in talking distance of you, and I'm going to ask you this'.  We ended up playing with each other at this alumni event for the University of Colorado Denver, which is where we both went and Jeanie went a while back.  She ended up playing for us with 'Taming Lions' . . . and after we were done, we asked if she would track on the album.  It was really awesome." said Varney.

With a produced sound and musical flair from Denver friends, Glowing House is enthusiastic about this new album. "It's been great to have these other people come in and it felt like the song was brand new for us.  We don't give them any direction; like what you hear Wes playing is out of Wes' head."  said Parsons.  "We feel really proud of this one.  I think for the first time [a recording of ours] gives a good representation of what we are."




Poet's Row is a folk duo made up of Emily Hobbs and Mickey Bakes, and "Daydream" was the last single they released in early January from their Exquisite Corpse EP.



You Me and Apollo is a folk band led by Colorado Springs-born Brent Cowles and the five-piece call Fort Collins home. Their last release was Cards and Cheats, and their most recent single is "Before I Die" which is included here for your listening pleasure.

Not to be upstaged, Against Me! recently made big waves in the punk scene by announcing singer Tom Gabel's decision to officially become transgender and change his name to Laura Grace.  Against Me! orignated in the college punk swamp in Gainesville, FL where bands like Hot Water Music and Less Than Jake gained popularity with record companies like No Idea and Fat Wreck Chords.  The new album  will be appropriately titled Gender Dysphoria Blues, a reference to the condition that Gabel cites that spurred him to choose the transgender lifestyle he is embarking on in front of the whole world.  Last night marked his first performance as Laura, and it will be very exciting to see how the band is reacting to the recent changes on stage.

Supporting these two big acts will be The Icarus Line from Los Angeles, CA.  Being 14 years young will make this band just as seasoned as the rest of the night's lineup.  They should be releasing a new record soon, of which the first single, "Bad Bloods / Slow Death," was released just a few months ago.

What a line up!  Lupe Fiasco's tour is stopping in Denver to support Lupe's last release, LASERS, and upcoming Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album.  Lupe was in Denver on a tour stop not too long ago, and made the news when he stopped by the Occupy Denver encampment to drop off blankets and tents.  A political and thoughtful rapper, Lupe's songs have been praised by critics and made it to the top of the pop charts with his last big single "The Show Goes On".  Tonight at City Hall Lupe will be performing with local acts Foodchain, Pries and DJ Mu$a.

Ten years ago a group of punk rockers in Los Angeles came together to form a hardcore punk band called The Bronx. After a few years, their high energy sound and performances got the band to release their second studio album on a major label, and with it came an unexpected turn and the birth of the band's alter ego. It came somewhat unexpectedly, as the emergence of that alter ego came out of spite. The Bronx was asked to play on a television show, but with a request that didn't please this group of punk rockers - they were asked to play an acoustic version of one of the songs off of their second album. Not wanting to do anything soft or watered down, The Bronx decided to take it into a new direction entirely - they donned sombreros and performed the song in mariachi style.


Just like that, Mariachi El Bronx was born. What started unexpectedly ended up being an idea that The Bronx embraced. The Bronx was never intended to be a soft and quiet band, so the Mariachi El Bronx alter ego breathed new life into the band members and allowed both bands to progress in ways they might not have otherwise. Now Mariachi El Bronx two albums, both of them eponymously named, with the latest being released last year. With that, the band's fusion of mariachi and punk became an earnest endeavor, beyond how it started as sort of a joke. Their fusion of seemingly opposite cultures may perhaps be the most punk rock thing they've done. Check out "Map of the World".



Two Gallants, a folk rock duo from San Francisco will kick off the night of music. The band is made up of childhood friends Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel who began playing music together since the mid '90s. About a decade later, they began fusing together roots/folk music with the punk and grunge music they grew up around in the San Francisco bay area that now is characteristic of the Two Gallants sound. Don't you just love band names?  I particularly like to play the game where you try to guess what type of music a band makes from their name alone; it's good tactic for book covers, obviously, but with band names it becomes really funny really fast.  Please indulge yourself if you haven't heard of these bands before, then read on for the scoop on tonight's lineup that the Larimer Lounge.

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's are pop music first, but have a punk attitude and somewhat experimental in sound as they dabble in a few different types of sounds on each album they have released so far.  In 2006, the band released the emotionally-driven The Dust of Retreat and gained many fans with the single "Skeleton Key".  Since then the group has disbanded and reformed with new members and new grittier sounds with 2010 release of their third album Buzzard.  Singer and songwriter Richard Edwards is a lyrical whiz who puts a cute spin on any song with pop hooks throughout.  The March release of Rot Gut, Domestic (unfortunately the band didn't take advantage of the excellent marketing opportunity to release a microbrew with the same name) features songs that are '90s influenced rock, but maintain personality such as with "A Journalist Falls in Love with Death Row Inmate #16" which is about an unlikely relationship with a felon (I guess it happens, i.e. Danny Rawlings) and "Prozac Nation" which is most certainly an ode to the beloved pharmaceutical industry.




Whispertown is the newest version of Morgan Nagler's band, formerly the Whispertown 2000. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings have their own label, Acony records based in Nashville, and Whispertown is the only other band they've released on it. The new EP Parallel is the bands 2nd release, and the follow up to their previous release, Swim.




Dinosaur feathers is an indie-pop quartest from Brooklyn that cites Billy Joel as an influence on their Facebook page. I think that is a great summation for a new band.
